Review: BlueAnt Q3 Premium Smartphone Bluetooth Earpiece
The BlueAnt Q3* developers must be avid iphone & Smartphone users, as this Earpiece does EXACTLY what it says it does and then some…
BlueAnt markets the “Q3” as “for the smartphone” and it really is an earpiece built for the workings of a smartphone.
I’m very fortunate that my workplace allowed me to get a new earpiece, as when I leave work in the afternoons the office line is transferred to my cellphone for the next few hours, while I’m doing double duty being a Mom for Miss 13 and on call for work also.
I answer calls, make follow-up calls, write text messages and emails and set reminders in all sorts of locations. In Supermarkets, at Sports Practices, in Libraries…but ALOT of the calls happen whilst we are driving in the car. Hence the need for a really well performing hands free Bluetooth Earpiece.
I spent hours upon hours trawling the internet looking for one that would have me very nearly completely handsfree. I was looking for one that could do:
- voice activated answering
- caller identification (voice announcement of who is calling me)
- voice activated dialing
- integrate with my iphone address book
- dictate my text messages
- allow me to still use the Siri function on my iphone to set new reminders, add events to calendars etc…
Many other earpieces seemed to offer some of those features, but not all of them together that I could find. Namely no voice answering and no caller identification.
I also have a small ear as a whole and a small earl canal space (yup a bit weird). So normal earphone ear buds hurt after a minute or two, or simply don’t fit/fall out.
I looked at models from:
But still found none that I determined did all I wanted and specifically integrated well with the iphone 4s. But I did kept stumbling across this “Q3” from BlueAnt that hadn’t been released yet, but had showcased at a tradefair or something. There was a Q2 model that seemed to rate fairly well with reviewers and people were anticipating great things from the Q3.
I couldn’t go and see a Q3 in a store to get a feel for it or try it out as it hadn’t been released yet. But it seemed like my best possible option if the marketing hype fit the product.
Decided eventually to take the chance, (hoping like crazy it would pan out) and I Pre-Ordered one via the BlueAnt Australia website who ships to New Zealand.
AUS$99 + $29 freight = $129 (around NZD$159).
It was due for release at the end of the month. It took around 6 weeks to arrive & I had to enquire via email to BlueAnt customer service as to when it was going to arrive, then this large box arrived the very next morning! Customer service replied very promptly.
I was super excited, but also nervous incase it was an expensive dud!
My giant box opened to reveal a little styling looking perspex box inside which was beautifully packaged…
I opened it all up, laid it all out, read the instructions (yup, that’s in my nature), which said I would need to ensure Bluetooth was switched on, on my iphone 4s and then turn the Q3 on and follow the steps xyz to sync it to it.
I turned on the Q3, it automatically synced it to my iphone & it was literally INSTANTLY READY TO USE, so in approx 10 seconds I was making my first call! Super-super impressed.
- Super easy
- Sound quality was nice and clear
- Volume was loud and easy to manage
- It integrated with Siri really well
(I think Siri even dictated my words clearer than when I hold my phone up to my ear!)
- I was really really delighted with it
The volume button its a rocker switch that is easy to flick up or down either before you start or during a conversation. It can also be switched around in the settings depending which ear you wear it on, so UP is always volume up etc…
I thought I would need to use the ear loop that comes with it, with my tiny ears to hold it in place. But once I attached the smallest “inner ear bud loopey thingy”, the Q3 fit perfectly in my ear, it was comfortable, it was secure, I even jumped around & shock my head & it still stayed put!
Having no ear loop makes it even faster to put in place. When Im driving and on call I have it in my ear all the time. But if my phone rings and its not in my ear I just grab it, flick the ON switch on easily with one hand, the pairing is lightning fast, pop it in my ear, say “Answer” in less than 5 seconds flat.
To make a call. I just tap the button on the outside edge twice, which activates Siri with the normal acknowledgement beep that says when she’s ready, say who I want to call eg. “Call Mom” or “Call Work” or “Call Jack mobile” and hey presto its ringing.
When a call comes through, a voice tells me who is calling (after gaining the information from my iphone contacts) eg. “Jack” or “BP New Zealand Ltd”.
To answer a call, I just say the word “Answer” and it does so instantly. Or I can tap the outside button to answer.
Or I can ‘screen’ my calls and choose to Ignore the call, which is very helpful when I’m driving as I will only take the important ones in my earpiece if it’s reasonably safe to do so.
I can listen to music through it using it as a headphone.
I can watch a movie.
It’s fairly discrete, so I don’t feel too uber-techy-geeky with it. As I have long hair, it’s not very noticeable if I have to jump out if the car whilst still mid conversation.
Sometimes I forget I have it on & have walked quite some distance away from my phone, like into pay at the petrol station & then its rung in my ear to my surprise.
I use it 5 days a week for a couple of hours each day. The voice prompt when I turn it on, tells me the Battery is still ‘fine’ or ‘high’. I think I only have to charge it every 8 weeks or so, so that is great going!
- Voice Answer
- Caller Identification
- Great Fit
- Voice Clarity & Usability
- Fantastic battery life
- Decent volume (I don’t even have it at the highest)
- Main Button could be a little easier to push. You have to more ‘push’ it than ‘tap’ it
- I’m a bit over the voice prompts, as now I know what to do, but I think I can disable them in the settings
- Successful contact integration which means it will announce the caller – yeah
- Lightning fast pairing
I am absolutely delighted with the BlueAnt Q3*.
It has exceeded my expectations & I would highly recommend it for iphone users and people with small ears ;-).
